Report for Thetford GC v AOGS, August 12 2017
Thetford is a lovely James Braid designed course located in spectacular woodland. The course threads its way through beautiful, tall, mature pines and many of the fairways are framed with heather. As you would expect from a James Braid course, the layout is challenging, starting with a glorious 200 yard plus par 3.
The home team certainly had the upper-hand on the course. I was playing against Trevor, the Club Captain who, playing off 10, was level par through 9! Having been dormy 6 down, my partner Fred and I fought manfully to only lose 3 &2. The team score followed much the same pattern with flights 2 and 3 being similarly beaten. Our honour was restored by the final flight: coming down 18 all square, our valiant Match Manager, Chris Buisseret, was faced with a 20-foot putt (that was up to about 100 feet by the time we finished dinner!) that he duly holed for the win making the overall score 3-1 to the Club.
Having been pressed into singing last year by the guitar wielding David Griffiths, the Captain, Trevor has printed out the lyrics to various songs – fortunately I am not as musically talented are our ex-Captain so no singing was required.
This is an excellent fixture which, in combination with the Sunday fixture at Royal Worlington & Newmarket, is very accessible to everyone no matter where they are based. The Saturday fixture is an afternoon match – I was able to leave Wiltshire at a very reasonable time (0800) to arrive with ample time to have lunch before the match. We then had dinner at the Club – very enjoyable affair. Golf the next day was at 0900 followed by lunch – I was home shortly in Wiltshire after 1800. I would recommend that any member of the society, irrespective of location, should consider this fixture for next year.
