Report for Royal Worlington & Newmarket GC v AOGS, August 13 2017
Royal Worlington & Newmarket is one of those happy accidents of golf; the right piece of land, the vision to do something with it and the right husbandry for over a century that delivers nine-holes of joy. This is the only nine-hole course that features in the UK & Ireland’s top-100 and I have to confess, is a pleasure to play. The well drained sandy soil gives the course a very ‘linksy’ feel and the greens are as testing as those at any Open venue.
The course lived up to its reputation – it may be a nine-hole course but it is no pushover; the 200 yard plus par 3 second and the super-tricky par 3 fifth stand out. Having much the same nucleus to the team as that which was put to the sword the previous day by Thetford Golf Club, it was very much a case of redemption, AOGS winning the match 3-2.
Golf was followed by an excellent 3-course curry lunch in the charming clubhouse with speeches, jokes and a great sense of bonhomie. All-in-all I had a most enjoyable weekend and would commend this East Anglian mini-tour to any AOGS members for next year.
Many thanks must go to Roger Dalzell, our very enthusiastic Match Manager.
