Match Report – AOGS v Royal Ashdown Forest GC 2017

Report for Royal Ashdown Forest GC v AOGS, September 2 2017

Saturday 2 September saw the inaugural fixture of the match between AOGS and the gentlemen of Royal Ashdown Golf Club. Royal Ashdown has two courses threaded through the trees affording glorious views across the Sussex countryside and the forest from the higher points on the course – the view from the 11th tee of the Old is truly spectacular. The Old Course is entirely natural with not a single bunker; the heather that frames the fairways is challenge enough.

We were blessed with bright, crisp morning that turned into a magnificent, balmy September day: the welcome given by our hosts was just as warm. The gathered throng enjoyed their coffee and bacon rolls while taking in the magnificence of the courses from the balcony of the Old Course clubhouse.

The first 18 was played over the Old Course and at lunch, the match was well balanced at 3½ to 2½ in favour of the Club. We were treated to a glorious carvery lunch and a few glasses of the delicious Club Claret and the odd word from each party.

The second 18 (or 9 or 11 depending on the arrangement between the players) saw the Club press home its advantage winning the afternoon foursomes 4 to 2.

The loss was, however, the only downside of the day. The match was thoroughly enjoyable and the company, charming; this is set to become a cornerstone fixture of the AOGS calendar.
