The 2017 AOGS Summer Meeting was held across the courses at Royal St. George’s Golf Club and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club from 13 June to 16 June. Both courses were in magnificent condition; the course at Sandwich was being made ready for the Amateur Open that started on the following Monday and Deal is being prepared for open Qualifying in July.
The Individual competitions got underway on Tuesday 13 at Royal Cinque Ports in brilliant sunshine with the temperature into the high 20s. There were notable performances from Charles Birchall with a net 71 and Stuart Poole with the best gross score of 81 giving him a net 73.
Day 2 saw us at Royal St. George’s. To protect the greens for The Amateur Open, pins were at extreme edges making scoring difficult. The outstanding rounds of the day were brought home by Ian Pretsell with a mighty impressive gross 79, the only player to break 80 and a superb, net 72 by Roger Antolik.
The overall winner of the Gold Medal was Ian Pretsell with a combined gross score of 163, beating the very consistent, Steve Watson into second place with a score of 166.
The evening saw prize giving followed by the AGM in the magnificent setting of the Smoking Room at Royal St. Georges. After the AGM, we held a dinner in the dining room. The key outcomes of the AGM were that next year’s Summer Meeting will be in East Lothian with the venues to be finalised shortly and David Griffiths stepped down as Captain after 6 years in the post.
We hosted two guests at dinner, Jon Munro the Captain at Royal Cinque Ports and Robert Leigh, the Assistant Secretary at Royal St. George’s. The dinner provided those present with an opportunity to dine out David Griffiths who has been our Captain of AOGS since 2011 and to welcome our Incoming Captain, David Watson (Doc) to his new role.
For those of you that have known David over the years, I am sure you would want to join in thanking him for his unstinting enthusiasm and work to have got the Society into the healthy state it now enjoys. To the delight of the gathered members and guests, David regaled us with his rendition of Ridecilla! You will be thrilled to learn that this was recorded and will be appearing on the website soon!
